The Lemans was marketed from 1961 to 1981. The Lemans started life as an upgrade trim package on the Tempest and became a stand-alone model in 1963. This 1969 Lemans is considered a third-generation model which ran from 1968-1972. The Pontiac GTO made its entrance in 1963 for the 1964 model year. In the early 60s Pontiac was looking to introduce a new car to the market and unveiled the Lemans. It was placed as the top-of-the-line version of the Tempest. It would only take until 1963 for the Lemans to appear as its own model in the Pontiac lineup. The Pontiac Lemans would see 5 generations across 20 years. The GTO designation would first appear as a package for the Lemans in 1964 and would start an incredible movement in the automotive world ushering in the muscle car wars!
