The concept of the VW Type 2 bus was credited to a Dutch VW importer Ben Pon back in 1947. The inspiration came from rather strange looking motorized trolleys used to transport parts around the factory that were made from stripped down Beetle chassis and running gear. His sketch design of a beetle-based van was taken into production a few years later with Volkswagen officially launching the Type 2 Van at the Geneva Motor Show in November 1949. Over the next four decades, the basic design remained the same with around five million buses being produced over that time. As the design was so uncomplicated, VW was able to turn out 90 different body combinations over the first five years of production. These variations included buses, pick-ups, fire engines, ambulances, beer wagons, refrigerated ice-cream vans, milk floats, mobile butchers- shops, bread vans, mobile grocers, delivery vans and the well known and loved camper.

Also known as a rail these custom made vehicles were designed for mainly use in the dunes. With its lightweight, rear engine design, they make great straight line racers. With just a simple change of the rear tires from paddles to regular radials you have very capable street vehicle. This custom built, street legal show quality build has had well over 20 grand thrown at it not including the custom paint work. The rear part of this rail houses a 2000CC chromed out air cooled motor that has just about every go fast part thrown at it. With Weber carbs hanging off either side you can tell this thing is built to run. The flamethrower coil sends that extra spark to the clear red EMPI cap. The Empi intake manifolds look great and match the dual Weber's perfectly. Taking care of all those spent gasses is the loudest exhaust set up I have ever heard from 4 cylinders.
