The VW Thing, also called the VW type 181, was imported to the US for 2 years between (1973 and 1974) and is arguably the most unique and versatile car ever made by VW. The car can be readily configured by the user to be with or without windows, doors, windshield, and top. The engine is 4-cylinder, 1600 CC, air-cooled, and is in the rear. This vehicle is a ground-up, disassemble-reassemble restoration. There is no rust, particularly of the floor pans and other places where VW start to degrade. The undercarriage has been treated with a weather protective rubberized sealant. The engine was rebuilt and modified to accept dual Kadron carburetors and a solid-state ignition. The upholstery was done in VW style except for the addition of the stripes that match the exterior paint. The color of the exterior is a period correct VW color, but it is not seen that off them (Ravenna Green). From the factory there was no radio, but this vehicle has a modern AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth stereo. The Type 181 is a two-wheel drive, four-door, convertible, on/off-road, military type vehicle manufactured by Volkswagen from 1968 to 1983. Originally developed for the West German Army, the Type 181 was also sold to the public as the Kurierwagen in West Germany, the Trekker in the United Kingdom (in right hand drive), The Thing in the United States (1973-74), the Safari in Mexico and South America, and Pescaccia in Italy.
