Chevrolet introduced the El Camino in 1959 as a result of a suggestion from automotive great Harley Earl. The 'Coupe Utility' was based on the Brookwood two-door station wagon and offered a full-sized pickup bed in a highly styled, low-slung sedan body. The vehicle was an immediate success, outselling its Ford competitor, the Rancher,o nearly 2 to 1. The second generation, starting in 1964, was based on the Chevelle chassis but initially did not offer the high-horsepower Chevelle powerplants. In 1965, a slight facelift was introduced, along with the availability of more engines, including a high-performance 350 HP 327 CI V8. This particular 1965 El Camino features a 327 CI high compression block that has been bored. 030 over, emulating what an L79 would have produced from the factory. The engine is paired with a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, delivering a hands-on, connected driving experience. The vehicle comes equipped with power steering and power brakes to enhance drivability, as well as air conditioning for added comfort.
