The Firebird and Camaro launched the same year and were an instant hit. They were applauded and offered a nice alternative to the Ford Mustang- which had a 3 year head start in the Pony-Car market. And although Firebird and Camaro shared the same F body platform, Pontiac managed through the year to offer a very distinctive look over it's GM competitor. Firebirds differ from big brother Lemans & GTO A bodies mainly due to having a partial frame only under the front, and subframe & leaf springs in the rear. As a result, they are lighter. which made them winners at the dragstrips and with gearheads on the street. They also made eye-catching daily drivers.
