In 1962 Duntov and the boys at GM started a project known as 'The Lightweight', to prove that the Stingray platform could not only meet but beat the competition not only from Europe but from the vehicle that GM originally had first dibs at providing the power plant for, the AC Cobra. Originally the 63 Z06 'racer package' was to prove its competition worth but in both good light and bad exposed some of the main flaws with the Stingray, namely weight and braking capability. Using aluminum structure pieces and 4 wheel disc brakes they turned the Stingray into some serious competition. The 5 prototype Grand Sports are still around to this day and are displayed around the country, which brings us to this example. First you start out with a near perfect restoration. Restored with the correct interior and exterior color combinations, wheels and trim, it has an all original look, but then there are some definite subtle surprises. First you may or may not notice that it sits slightly lower than original. This was accomplished with two inch lowering spindles in the front. That way ride and alignment are not affected. The rear was lowered with two inch lowering blocks for the same reason. With that the stance is pretty much perfect. Getting into the car you-ll notice the factory chrome trim sparkling and the paint shining. Then you see the radio, hmmmm it looks slightly different. It is a digital radio with auxiliary inputs. Below that you-ll notice the under dash AC unit and to the left you see three additional gauges just to make sure everything is operating as it should.

The first generation Corvette has always been one of the most memorable and iconic designs amongst Corvette enthusiasts and car lovers all over.
