Mercury introduced the Cougar in 1967 as the Pony Car wars were in full swing. Based on the original Mustang, the Cougar was designed to be an upscale performance icon and an alternative to the popular Mustang. The Cougar was intentionally styled with a European flair to set it apart from other Pony Cars of the day.

The concealed headlights were only offered on the first-generation cars, 1967-68-69. The consignor has owned it since 1984 and won many awards! That's not hard to believe with the beautiful Turquoise exterior with the Turquoise Vinyl exterior. This Cougar is powered by the original 289 CI V-8, mated to a C-4 automatic transmission with 122,000 miles on the clock.

Although the name is iconic in Ford folklore, the introduction of the Cougar in 1967 was simply intended to give the upmarket Mercury division its own version of the Mustang. In the early years ('67 and '68) only a 2-door hardtop body-style was offered and ours comes in just that form. The delightful Silver Blue exterior paintjob is coupled with a glossy Black vinyl top and this '67 sits on era-appropriate wire hubcap wheels with white striped radial tires. You can see the hints of Pony Car in the Cougar, but this classy Cat has stand-alone features of its own such as hideaway headlights in a split front fascia and vertically slatted chrome trim on the taillights. It's hard to argue with the significantly higher quality of the Cougar interior either; this example features highlights such as Light Blue vinyl bucket seats with safety belts, gauges for speed/fuel level/water temperature and a clock behind a woodgrain tilt steering wheel, center console with hideaway storage cubby and built-in retro stereo with AM/FM radio. The 1970 Mercury Cougar appearance changed slightly from the 1969 model with a new front end that featured a pronounced center hood extension and electric shaver style grille setting it apart from the previous year. The XR-7 option could be added on that included more luxurious appointments with a simulated wood-grained dashboard with a full set of black-faced competition instruments and toggle switches, a T-handle center automatic transmission shifter, and leather and vinyl upholstery. This 1970 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible is powered by its rebuilt 351 'Cleveland' CID V8 Engine, backed by a C6 3-speed automatic transmission, and running to a 3. 00 geared rear end. This true XR7 originally came equipped with a 351 Cleveland with a 2 barrel carburetor and a FMX transmission, but was swapped out to a 1970 351 Cleveland engine that is topped with a 4 barrel carburetor, 'quench heads' and was built to spec and dressed up to as close to a 'Boss 351' as possible. The FMX transmission was then replaced with a beefier C6 transmission to hold up to the extra power of the mighty 351.
