The Mercury Cougar was produced from 1967-1997 and from 1998-2002 with just under three million units sold. Manufactured for an astonishing eight model generations making the Cougar the highest selling vehicle in the Mercury lineup. The first- generation Cougar was produced from 1967-1970. The 1969-70 models went from a strait-lined body to a Coke bottle design featuring a sweeping crease from the hood to the rear wheels. The vent windows were also deleted. In 1970 the Cougar received revisions to the front fascia including revised front fenders and front bumper.

The 1970 Mercury Cougar appearance changed slightly from the 1969 model with a new front end that featured a pronounced center hood extension and electric shaver style grille setting it apart from the previous year. The XR-7 option could be added on that included more luxurious appointments with a simulated wood-grained dashboard with a full set of black-faced competition instruments and toggle switches, a T-handle center automatic transmission shifter, and leather and vinyl upholstery. This 1970 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible is powered by its rebuilt 351 'Cleveland' CID V8 Engine, backed by a C6 3-speed automatic transmission, and running to a 3. 00 geared rear end. This true XR7 originally came equipped with a 351 Cleveland with a 2 barrel carburetor and a FMX transmission, but was swapped out to a 1970 351 Cleveland engine that is topped with a 4 barrel carburetor, 'quench heads' and was built to spec and dressed up to as close to a 'Boss 351' as possible.
