This particular Thunderbird originated in California. The T-Bird was Henry Ford's response to the Chevrolet Corvette. Though it was sleek and sporty, the Thunderbird was not considered a sports car to Ford, but a 'personal luxury vehicle. ' This T-Bird is powered by the legendary 292 Y-block V8, which has been bored 30 over and was rebuilt about 9 years ago. This 1956 Ford Thunderbird features the Ford-o-Matic 2 speed automatic transmission. The transmission was also rebuilt with a shift kit. It has a '57 manifold and carburetor. Ford offered two models for 36, the 48 and 68 series. They were both carry over from 35 but with modest upgrades. This --36 five window is a true throw back to those times. In 1959, Chevrolet once again radically redesigned the body style of the Impala. The 1959 Impala roofline was a full three inches lower and the body was two inches wider. The most stunning feature of the new '59 Impala had to be the protruding tail fins which now housed a pair of very large single 'teardrop' taillights. Some refer to these taillights as 'cat eyes. ' The headlights of the Impala were a full seven inches lower than the previous year. The 'teardrop' design was also featured on the hood vents of the '59.
