1966 Oldsmobile Toronado
View Description
Still dawning its Toronado-only Ocean Mist color, this Toronado was cared for beautifully over the years by two Oldsmobile enthusiasts. The first was a long-time member of the Oldsmobile Club of America and the second was a retired Oldsmobile dealer. The loving care is fitting, as the Toronado holds a special place in American automotive history. It was the first American-made, front-wheel-drive vehicle since the death of the Cord in 1937.
As 1966 was the first year of its production, consumers were originally hesitant about the FWD platform, so General Motors employed racing legend Bobby Unser for commercials where he drove the vehicle and complimented its steering and drivability. After extensive research and testing, it was determined that while the weight-bias towards the frontend created the potential for understeer, it was no worse than other American luxury vehicles of the era. In addition to its FWD status, the Toronado was also GM-s first subframe vehicle and also won the 1966 Motor Trend Car of the Year Award and placed third in the 1966 European Car of the Year Contest, the first and last American-made vehicle to do so.
This Toronado was restored in the early --90s and has held up incredibly...
